Class, Subclass VCM (VCSC) Study
ENROLLMENT IS CLOSED. STUDY INSTRUCTIONS EMAIL SENT JULY 11.
About
The 2022 Class, Subclass VCM Study is being conducted by Cadre Forensics. We expect this to be a short study where you will view a sequence of individual 3D cartridge case scans where for each surface you will assign class labels and assess the potential presence of subclass. You will not be asked to assess source. We expect that the study will take just a few hours to complete (likely fewer than 2 hours). The study will be split into two parts. After completing the first study, the software will require you to wait two weeks before beginning part 2. Please complete the enrollment form (link above) to sign up for the study. Please note that your information will remain anonymous and will not be used for any purpose beyond the Class, Subclass study. The study will be completed in June 2022.
Why?
It is important to estimate the consistency in examiner assigned class labels. Many new VCM systems, databases, and statistical models may rely on the examiner assigned class label. For example, if a cartridge case is labeled as having a parallel breech-face impression it may be compared using a statistical model designed for parallel specimens. We are also interested in assessing examiner's consistency in identifying potential subclass marks. Subclass marks may have the potential to complicate scoring algorithms and automated statistical models.
Who?
The study will be open to examiners, trainees, technicians, and researchers within the discipline of firearm and toolmark examination. Individuals from any country can participate. No experience with VCM is required as the study begins with a training/orientation module.
How?
Participants will receive a temporary license to use Cadre's Virtual Comparison Microscopy testing software to complete the study. The software will run on participant computers. A sufficiently new/powerful computer is required to complete the study. Most Windows 7, 10, or 11 computers purchased in 2016 or later should be able to run the software. The software will not run on Macintosh. An internet connection is required to access the study materials. The study is designed to require no more than two hours of examiner time. Most participants will use much less than two hours.
When?
The study will begin in June 2022. Participants will have a few weeks to complete the study.
